We love seeing visitors’ animals in Tiree, and we’ll do our best to help if yours needs a vet while you’re here. Please read this before you travel, particularly if your animal is elderly, unwell or on regular medication.
Vet cover in Tiree is not continuous
Animal Care Tiree is a community-owned practice staffed by visiting vets. There are weeks when no vet is here. We cannot guarantee that a vet will be available when you need one.
If your animal is ill, frail or recovering from treatment, speak to your own vet about whether the trip is a good idea. Plan as if you may not be able to see a vet during your stay.
Before you travel
- Bring enough of any regular medication to last the whole trip, plus a few extra days in case of ferry disruption.
- Bring your vet’s phone number and your animal’s medical history, including current medication and doses.
- Check that your own vet is happy to give remote advice if something goes wrong while you’re away.
If your animal becomes unwell
Step 1 – Check whether a vet is here
Our app shows who is on the island and when: app.animalcaretiree.co.uk
Step 2 – If a vet is here
Get in touch and we’ll happily see your animal. Call 01879 552 101 and we’ll arrange an appointment or help in an emergency.
Step 3 – If there is no vet here
Contact your own vet first for advice.
We are not legally able to prescribe medication for an animal our vets have not examined.
If your vet decides to prescribe, we may be able to dispense the medication for you. Your vet will need to contact us directly with the prescription. Availability depends on what we hold in stock, and a dispensing fee applies.
The alternative is the vet practice in Oban, which is continually staffed.
